Luggage Rack

A luggage rack designed specifically to carry roof panels is a practical accessory for Corvette C3 owners. With the exception of the 1982 collectors edition, the non-opening rear hatch of the C3 models can make accessing the storage space behind the seats inconvenient. However, a luggage rack provides a solution by offering a secure and convenient way to transport the roof panels when they are not in use. This not only frees up interior space but also helps prevent damage or scratches to the roof panels.

From 1968 to 1976, a deck-mounted luggage rack was available as a dealer-installed option for the Corvette. In 1977, it transitioned to a factory option with the introduction of code Y54. The Chevrolet dealers' version of the rack featured six mounting points, while the factory-installed option included eight mounting points.

The presence of a luggage rack on Corvette C3 models has been a subject of fervent discussion among enthusiasts, with strong opinions on both sides of the spectrum. Some enthusiasts love the addition of a luggage rack, appreciating the practicality it offers by expanding storage space and providing a convenient way to transport items. They find it to be a stylish accessory that adds character to the Corvette's design.

On the other hand, there are enthusiasts who express dislike or even hate towards the luggage rack. They prefer the sleek and unadorned look of the Corvette C3's rear deck, considering the presence of a rack to be unnecessary or detrimental to the car's aesthetics. These differing opinions reflect the diverse tastes and preferences within the Corvette community. Ultimately, the decision to install a luggage rack comes down to personal preference and the intended use of the vehicle.

With the rear window design change in 1978, the availability of the luggage rack for the Corvette ceased. However, it wasn't until the 1980 model year that a new option, the V54 Roof panel carrier, was introduced. This removable accessory allowed Corvette owners to conveniently transport roof panels and was offered as an option in the 1980, 1981, and 1982 model years.
