The Corvette C3 was produced across two assembly plants. Vehicles from the 1968 through 1980 model years were built at the St. Louis assembly plant. Production of the 1981 model year took place at both the St. Louis and Bowling Green facilities, whereas the 1982 models were produced solely at Bowling Green. As a result, the trim tag design changed, which can be seen in the images above.
Next model year production started 3–4 months before January, so many “1977” cars were actually built in 1976, etc.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Where can I find the trim tag date code?
The trim tag (body data plate) is always located near the driver's side door hinge.
Code Format by Model Year:
- Older Years (e.g., pre-1981): Look for a three-character code after the word "CHEVROLET" (e.g., A07, L23).
- 1981–1982 Models: Look for a four-character code on the first line of the trim tag (structure: Letter, space, two Digits, Letter).
Why should I select the Model Year?
Codes repeat yearly. For example, cars designated as '77 models were often built in 1976. Selecting the correct Model Year ensures that the correct code chart is used for decoding your trim tag.
For 1981–1982 models, the code changed at the Green Assembly Plant: the **year is visible** in the code, but the specific assembly day was replaced by the assembly week.
