This aligns with recommendations from major tire manufacturers like Michelin and Goodyear, who advise replacement after six to ten years, depending on storage conditions.
To check tire age, look at the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the manufacturing date: for example, "2317" means the tire was made in the 23rd week of 2017. My Corvette’s Goodyear tires had DOT codes from the early 2000s, confirming they were well past their prime. Replacing them was a non-negotiable step to ensure safety on the road.
Choosing the Right Tires for a C3 Corvette
Selecting new tires for a classic Corvette involves balancing safety, performance, and the iconic C3 aesthetic. I wanted to preserve the car’s period-correct look, so I opted for raised white letter tires, a hallmark of 1970s muscle cars. After considering options among C3 enthusiasts, I bought the Cooper Cobra GT tires.
Two popular choices stand out:
- Cooper Cobra GT: Affordable, reliable, and widely praised for its classic styling and decent handling. It’s a go-to option for budget-conscious owners who want authenticity without sacrificing performance. This is the tire I chose in a 245/60R15 size, slightly wider than the stock 225/70R15, to enhance grip and fill out my aftermarket American Racing wheels.
- BFGoodrich Radial T/A: A slightly more premium choice, offering excellent grip and a bold, nostalgic look. It’s a favorite on Corvette forums for its balance of form and function.

Wheels: Balancing Current Setup and Future Plans
My Corvette currently sports American Racing aftermarket wheels, which complement the wider 245/60R15 Cooper Cobra GT tires and give the car a muscular stance. The wheels are in great condition, and the setup performs well, but I’m drawn to the classic look of the original Rally wheels. These iconic wheels, standard on many C3s, offer a timeless aesthetic that screams 1970s Corvette.
