Let’s dive into decoding the basics of a Corvette C3 using my 1976 Corvette as an example. With the Corvette C3 VIN decoder, you can uncover cool details like the original color, engine specs, and more. I’ll walk you through decoding my 1976 Corvette, then show you how to apply the same steps to reveal the details of your C3.

VIN
The Corvette C3's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) can be found on a metal plate attached to the lower front section of the driver's side windshield pillar. The VIN's location can be seen here.

To get information about your Corvette, like its original engine, etc., just enter the VIN into the decoder at CorvetteC3Decoder.com.

As we see, my Corvette is a 1976 Coupe with an L48 engine. It is car number 15,698 out of 46,558 and was manufactured in December 1975. The more specific build date can be found by entering the code from the Trim Tag into a birthday calculator.
Birthday Calculator
To find your car's exact build date, enter the code from the upper right corner of the Trim Tag into the Birthday calculator and select your Corvette's model year. My car was made on December 16, 1975.
You can check the Trim Tag's location in the following paragraph.

Trim Tag
The Trim Tag can be found on a metal plate attached to the driver's-side door hinge pillar.

As we can see from the Trim Tag information, my Corvette has a dark green exterior and a black leather interior. These codes confirm the original color combination of the car. Leather seats were incorporated into the Custom Interior package. This package, which included leather seats, delivered a more luxurious interior experience with distinctive door panels.

Engine code
The engine code, which identifies the specific engine type, is stamped directly onto the engine block. You can see the location of the engine code stamping here.
The original 'smog pump' made photographing the engine codes a bit challenging. :)

When you enter the Engine code into the Decoder, it displays the engine details. GM reused codes across different years, so you might get multiple results, as I did in my case. Here, the Partial VIN reveals the model year, which helps confirm the correct information.
In the next step, the engine is confirmed as a 1976 model, so it’s the 180hp version with an automatic transmission (TH350) and L48 California configuration.
Partial VIN

The Partial VIN reveals the engine manufacturer, model year (which we used earlier to pinpoint the correct engine code), and production plant. Additionally, the last six digits match the car’s VIN (Sequence numbers), allowing you to verify that the engine belongs to that specific vehicle.

My Corvette's VIN code, 1Z37L6S415698, matches the Partial VIN sequence number. In my case, the numbers match, confirming that my Corvette still has its original engine in place.
Quadrajet
The Quadrajet's identification details are stamped on the main body, located on the driver’s side.

From the carburetor details, we can see that the Quadrajet in my Corvette is from 1976 and built to the California standard for automatic transmissions. So, it looks like the carburetor is the original one that came with the car.
